About

Angelfish was a Scottish alternative rock band with a compelling blend of riot grrrl energy and alternative rock influences. Emerging from the remnants of the group Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, Angelfish was formed by Shirley Manson (vocals), Martin Metcalf (guitar), Fin Wilson (bass), and Derek Kelly (drums). Manson, who transitioned from keyboards and backing vocals in her previous band to become the charismatic frontwoman of Angelfish, quickly became the focal point of the group. Although their time together was brief, Angelfish left a notable mark with their self-titled debut album, which featured Manson's dynamic presence both in music videos and on the album cover.

How to Sound Like Angelfish

Angelfish's sound is characterized by dark, moody guitar riffs and Manson's evocative vocal delivery, creating a raw yet polished musical atmosphere. The guitar tones, often achieved with instruments like the Fender Mustang Electric Guitar and the Epiphone Casino, strike a balance between gritty and melodic, complemented by tight, driving rhythms from the bass and drums. Manson's vocals, captured with high-quality microphones such as the Telefunken Ela M 250, add an emotional intensity, threading through the music with both power and vulnerability. The overall sonic palette is tense and atmospheric, capturing the essence of their alternative rock and riot grrrl roots.
