About

Asphyx is a pioneering Dutch metal band renowned for their relentless fusion of death metal and doom metal elements. Formed in 1987 in Overijssel, the group has undergone numerous lineup changes but has consistently delivered their heavy, guttural sound. Key members over the years have included Bob Bagchus (drums), Tonny Brookhuis (guitar), Eric Daniels (guitar), and Martin van Drunen (vocals). Despite the evolving roster, Asphyx's commitment to aggressive, uncompromising metal has earned them a lasting place in the extreme metal scene.

How to Sound Like Asphyx

Asphyx's sound is characterized by its brutal and oppressive atmosphere. The band crafts their distinctive sonic identity using downtuned guitars and crushing riffs, often layered with sparse, eerie melodies that evoke a sense of impending doom. The guitar tones are dense and abrasive, frequently achieved through the use of high-gain tube amplifiers. The rhythm section is thunderous and relentless, with the drums providing a pummeling, double-bass-driven foundation that complements the low-end growl of the bass. Vocals are delivered with ferocious intensity, featuring deep growls and raw, guttural screams that cut through the dense instrumental backdrop. To capture Asphyx’s sound, musicians might focus on achieving a tight, cohesive mix that balances the heavy, distorted textures with the haunting, slower-paced doom elements.
