About
Better Than Ezra is an American rock band that emerged from the vibrant college rock scene of the late 1980s. Originally formed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1988, the band consists of Kevin Griffin (vocals, guitar), Tom Drummond (bass), and Michael Jerome (drums). Known for their blend of alternative rock, pop rock, and Southern rock, Better Than Ezra crafts a sound that combines the melodic sensibilities of '80s jangle pop with the dynamic energy of post-grunge. Their music gained widespread attention in the mid-'90s, particularly with the success of their hit single "Good" from their major-label debut, Deluxe.
How to Sound Like Better Than Ezra
Better Than Ezra's sonic character is defined by melodic guitar riffs and dynamic rhythms, creating a sound that is both energetic and accessible. The band's use of warm, overdriven guitar tones is central to their style, often achieved through the use of instruments like the Gibson Les Paul Goldtop and Gibson ES-345. These guitars, paired with rich, resonant bass lines from instruments such as the Fender Precision Bass, contribute to their robust, yet melodic sound. The drums provide a driving force, supporting the band's infectious hooks and anthemic choruses, while effects like overdrive and modulation add layers of depth, making their music both engaging and memorable.
