About
Big Grams is a unique collaboration that fuses the worlds of indie electronic and hip-hop. The group consists of Sarah Barthel (vocals, keyboards) and Josh Carter (vocals, guitar) from the Greenwich, New York duo Phantogram, and rapper Big Boi (vocals), one-half of the iconic Atlanta-based hip-hop duo OutKast. Their music is an inventive blend of alternative hip-hop, electronic rock, and experimental pop, showcasing the artistic synergy between the sultry, textured soundscapes of Phantogram and Big Boi's dynamic, southern hip-hop flair. The project emerged from a mutual admiration and creative exchange, resulting in their self-titled EP that features collaborations with artists like Skrillex and Run the Jewels.
How to Sound Like Big Grams
Big Grams' sound is characterized by its bold, genre-blurring style, combining pulsating electronic beats with lush, melodic synth lines and gritty guitar riffs. This eclectic mix creates an expansive yet intricate sonic palette. The use of a Fender American Pro Stratocaster HSS Shawbucker by Josh Carter delivers a robust, edgy tone, enhanced by the ZVEX Fat Fuzz Factory for rich, distorted textures. Meanwhile, the rhythmic foundation is anchored by Sarah Barthel's use of the Fender Mustang Bass, contributing to the deep, resonant grooves that complement Big Boi's articulate and rhythmic vocal delivery. The interplay of these elements creates a sound that is both electrifying and immersive, with a balance of digital precision and analog warmth.
