About
CHAI is a dynamic Japanese rock band known for their energetic blend of alternative rock, indie rock, and Japanese indie, with a vibrant aesthetic that challenges traditional notions of "kawaii" (cute) culture. Formed in Nagoya, Japan, the group consists of Mana Obata (vocals, keyboards), Kana Obata (guitar, vocals), Yuna Matsui (drums), and Yuuki (bass). CHAI's music is infused with themes of empowerment and self-acceptance, channeling the influences of eclectic acts like Basement Jaxx and Tom Tom Club. Their unique sound and lively performances have earned them a dedicated following across the globe.
How to Sound Like CHAI
CHAI's sound is characterized by its playful, yet assertive sonic palette, combining catchy melodies with a punchy rhythm section. The band's music often features bright, distorted guitar tones driven by effects like the Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion and the rich textures of a Gibson ES-335. The synth-laden soundscapes, courtesy of the Korg x50 and Korg MicroKORG, add a layer of electronic flair that complements their rock roots. Yuna's versatile drumming, often enhanced by the Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad, injects a modern twist, making CHAI's music both infectious and refreshing.
