About

Cough is a doom metal band hailing from Richmond, Virginia, known for their heavy, sludge-laden sound and dark, brooding atmospheres. Formed in 2005, the group consists of David Cisco (vocals, guitar), Parker Chandler (vocals, bass), Joseph Arcaro (drums), and later, Brandon Marcey (guitar). Their music is a fusion of doom, sludge, and stoner metal, drawing inspiration from bands like Cathedral and Electric Wizard, as well as the grimy sounds of Eyehategod and Buzzov-en. Over the years, Cough has carved out a niche within the metal scene with releases like Ritual Abuse and Still They Pray, showcasing their unique blend of crushing riffs and psychedelic undertones.

How to Sound Like Cough

Cough's sound is characterized by its dense, monolithic guitar tones and a murky, oppressive atmosphere. Their music often leans into a slow, droning heaviness that is both hypnotic and punishing. The use of amplifiers like the Matamp GT120 by David Cisco contributes to this weighty sound, delivering searing distortion and massive sustain. Parker Chandler's bass work, enhanced by gear such as the Sunn Beta Bass Head and Electro-Harmonix "Black Russian" Big Muff Pi V8, adds a deep, fuzzy layer that underpins the band's pummeling riffs. The drums offer a thunderous, primal backdrop that complements the band’s ominous vibe, creating a sonic experience that is both visceral and immersive.
