Description
Often described as the first great sounding solid state amplifier, the Beta was a revolutionary design when first launched. The unique analog MOSFET design provides a wide range of tones from clean to a distinctive fuzz like distortion that cleans up with the instrument volume control. Used by Kurt Cobain, Red Fang, The Melvins, and others, the Beta has cemented itself into rock history.
The Beta features two independent channels each with a full set of controls that can be used separately or blended using the included footswitch. Three effect loops provide a multitude of ways to integrate effects into your sound.

Quirky but very cool old bass head
I love this battered old beast! To be sure, it's not a good choice for modern, pristine, Top-40 sounds, but it has a lot of personality - think of the 60s and 70s blues-rock/classic rock/hard rock/early metal sounds, and that's the one. Two identical channels with drive (gain), bass/mid/treble EQ, channel volume, and then a master volume for the output section. What it does, it does very well.
As mentioned, the sound is "vintage", which is to be expected for a bass amp which was state-of-the-art in 1979. It produces old-fashioned tones that are suitable for just about any genre, as long as they're "of the era" - think Cream, Deep Purple, Ozzy-era Black Sabbath, Band of Gypsies, that kind of thing. These amps are also used by modern bands with old-fashioned sounds, especially garage, punk, retro, and stoner metal bands like Red Fang (you can see both Beta Bass and the Beta Lead guitar heads in several of their videos). Even Cliff Burton played through one for a while. It's "only" 100W of output power, but through a 15" speaker, it WILL compete with a full band.
Despite the seriously old-school vibe and sound, this amp has a couple of features that were pretty advanced when it was designed. The footswitchable two-channel design was almost unheard of on bass amps back then, and even cooler, it has THREE series effects loops - one for each channel, plus a master loop that effects both. Together, these features allow for more flexibility than most modern professional bass amps offer. Finally, the "DIGITAL C-MOS TECHNOLOGY" that is so proudly silkscreened on the front panel is no joke - the distortion on this sucker is GNARLY! Guitarists looking for wooly, 70s overdrive and distortion use these as guitar amps because the sound is so cool.

Nick used a Sunn Beta Concert to record Blue For The Red Sun with Kyuss back in 1992
I started using a Sunn Beta Bass amp, an old ’60s Ampeg 2×15 cab, and a Big Muff. I used this set up with Sourvein in the beginning, but again, still not loud enough!
In this video Jared has several heads. On the Top Left of his rig there is two Sunn Beta Bass' along with what looks like a Sunn Coleseum Bass also, and one other head (cant quite make it out).

In this photo Joe Preston can be seen performing as Thrones with a Sunn Beta Bass amplifier behind him.
My live and recording set-ups are exactly the same, and it is very, very simple. I play a mid-80s G&L SB-1 bass (which is the only piece of equipment I own that I have absolutely no recollection of buying) through a Sunn Beta Bass amp running a Traynor 4×12 speaker cabinet. The only pedals I have are the channel switcher that comes with the amp and a Boss TU-2 tuning pedal.
In the official music video for White Denim's song "Light On," James Petralli can be seen using a Sunn Beta Bass Head. At the 2:14 mark, there is a clear view of the Sunn bass amp head positioned on top of a Rhodes piano. This visual evidence is sourced from the band's official YouTube channel.
