About

Cranes is an English band known for their ethereal, haunting sound that blurs the lines between dream pop, gothic rock, darkwave, and shoegaze. Formed in Portsmouth in 1985 by siblings Alison Shaw (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar) and Jim Shaw (guitar, bass, keyboards, drums), Cranes have maintained a distinct sonic identity through various evolutions in their lineup and sound. Their music is characterized by Alison's unique, childlike vocals juxtaposed against a backdrop of atmospheric and sometimes industrial instrumentation. The band's lineup has included multi-instrumentalist Mark Francombe and guitarist Matt Cope, contributing to their dynamic and layered compositions.

How to Sound Like Cranes

Cranes’ music is defined by its ethereal and atmospheric quality, creating a soundscape that is both haunting and immersive. Their use of rich, textured guitar tones often involves a blend of acoustic elements, as seen with Jim Shaw’s Ovation Balladeer, and electric guitar effects that lean heavily on reverb and delay to craft an expansive, dreamlike environment. The dark, brooding bass lines underpin their compositions, providing a contrast to the airy vocals, while synth and keyboard layers add depth and a subtle industrial edge. The overall vibe is one of introspective melancholy, with dynamic shifts that draw listeners into a world where melodic and ambient elements coalesce seamlessly. This intricate interplay of sound creates an otherworldly experience that is both captivating and timeless.
