About

Chapterhouse is an English band that emerged from Reading in 1987, pioneering the shoegaze genre with their ethereal blend of alternative rock, dream pop, and nu gaze. The group initially consisted of Andrew Sherriff (vocals, guitar), Stephen Patman (vocals, guitar), Simon Rowe (guitar), Jon Curtis (bass), and Ashley Bates (drums). However, Curtis was later replaced by Russell Barrett. Known for their evolving sound, Chapterhouse released two influential albums, Whirlpool and Blood Music, that showcased their ability to merge drony space rock with the psychedelic influences of the Madchester scene.

How to Sound Like Chapterhouse

Chapterhouse's sound is defined by its lush, layered guitar textures and a dreamy, ambient vibe that captures the essence of the shoegaze movement. Their music often features heavily modulated and reverberant guitar tones, achieved through the use of effects like the Alesis Midiverb III and Alesis Quadraverb for expansive soundscapes. The use of a Fender Electric XII 12-String Guitar adds a shimmering quality to their tracks, while the Boss OD-1 OverDrive injects a subtle edge into their melodic layers. Combined with fuzz and distortion pedals like the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi, Chapterhouse crafts a sound that is both melancholic and immersive, enveloping listeners in a sonic dreamscape that is quintessentially their own.
