About

DD Smash is a renowned New Zealand rock band that emerged in the early 1980s, captivating audiences with their blend of classic NZ pop, kiwi rock, and NZ reggae. The group was initially formed under the name Dave Dobbyn's Divers by Dave Dobbyn (vocals, guitar), and included members Rob "Revox" Guy (guitar), Peter "Rooda" Warren (drums), and Lisle Kinney (bass). The band quickly gained popularity with their energetic performances and catchy tunes, marked by successful releases like their chart-topping debut album Cool Bananas. After several lineup changes, including the addition of Ian Morris (bass), DD Smash continued to make waves in the New Zealand music scene with hits like "Outlook for Tuesday" before eventually disbanding as Dobbyn pursued a solo career.

How to Sound Like DD Smash

DD Smash's sound is characterized by a robust and dynamic rock energy interwoven with melodic pop and reggae influences. To emulate their vibrant sound, musicians should focus on a clean yet punchy guitar tone, often achieved through solid-state amplifiers or vintage tube amps that provide both clarity and warmth. The use of chorus and delay effects can add depth to the guitar lines, while tight, rhythmically engaging drumming provides a lively foundation. Bass lines should be bold and driving, complementing the rhythmic intricacies of the compositions. The band's music thrives on catchy hooks and energetic arrangements, making bright, melodic vocals and dynamic songwriting essential components for capturing the essence of DD Smash's enduring appeal.
