About
Stellar* is a New Zealand-based kiwi rock band known for their dynamic sound and charismatic performances. Formed in the mid-1990s, the group features Boh Runga (vocals, guitar), who brings a powerful presence with her emotive songwriting and connection to music royalty as the sister of Bic Runga. Chris van der Geer (guitar) complements Runga with his intricate guitar work, while Kurt Shanks (bass) provides a solid rhythmic foundation. Andrew Maclaren (drums) rounds out the quartet with his energetic and precise percussion. The band rose to prominence with chart-topping singles like "What You Do" and "Part of Me," and their debut album Mix achieved multi-platinum success in New Zealand, earning them several Tui awards.
How to Sound Like Stellar*
Stellar* crafts their sound around driving, melodic guitar lines and punchy, rhythmic bass grooves. Their music often features layered guitar textures, blending clean and distorted tones to create a rich, full-bodied sound. The use of dynamic effects like delay and reverb adds depth and atmosphere, enhancing their anthemic choruses and introspective verses. Tube amplifiers are likely a key component, providing the warmth and punch necessary for their energetic rock sound. The drumming is tight and propulsive, with an emphasis on maintaining a strong groove that supports the band's melodic elements. For musicians looking to emulate Stellar*’s style, focusing on a balance of clean and overdriven tones, along with ambient effects, will be essential in capturing their vibrant sonic landscape.
