About

Engineers is a London-based band known for its immersive blend of dream pop, nu gaze, and shoegaze. Formed in May 2003, the group originally comprised Simon Phipps (lead vocals, guitar), Dan MacBean (guitar, keyboards), Mark Peters (bass, guitar, background vocals), and Andrew Sweeney (drums, background vocals). Their music channels the ethereal and atmospheric qualities reminiscent of late '80s and early '90s shoegaze, drawing influences from iconic bands like Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, with a nod to the harmonic richness of the Beach Boys.

How to Sound Like Engineers

Engineers craft a lush, floating soundscape characterized by hazy, reverberant textures and melodic guitar lines. Their sonic palette leans heavily on the ambient side, with spacious, echoing layers that evoke a sense of drifting through a dream. Essential to their aesthetic are effects processors like the Quantec Room Simulator, which help create their signature ethereal atmosphere, and synthesizers such as the Roland JD-XA, adding rich, analog warmth to their compositions. The drums and bass are often understated, providing a subtle, rhythmic foundation that supports the band's expansive sonic explorations.
