About
Giant Squid is an eclectic musical group hailing from Sacramento, California, known for their unique blend of progressive metal, avant-garde, post-rock, and doom metal. The band was formed by the husband and wife duo Aaron Gregory (vocals, guitar, banjo, theremin) and Aurielle Gregory (vocals, guitar, keyboards). The lineup also includes Bryan Beeson (bass) and Michael Conroy (drums). Over the years, Giant Squid has captivated audiences with their ability to weave together diverse genres, creating a sound that is both heavy and atmospheric, often drawing comparisons to bands like Neurosis and Melvins.
How to Sound Like Giant Squid
Giant Squid's sound is characterized by its dense, layered textures and dynamic contrasts. Their music often features heavy, distorted guitar riffs interwoven with melodic, ambient passages, creating a soundscape that is both aggressive and introspective. The use of instruments like the banjo and theremin adds a unique tonal color, contributing to the avant-garde edge of their compositions. A combination of analog delay pedals and reverb effects are used to craft expansive and immersive soundscapes, while tube amps help deliver the warm, organic tone that underpins their heavier sections. The rhythm section provides a powerful and driving foundation, with bass lines that are both thick and intricate, supporting the band's complex arrangements. Drums are played with a dynamic sensibility, often shifting from thunderous beats to gentle, textured rhythms, enhancing the band's ability to move seamlessly between intensity and subtlety.
