About
Hard-Ons are a pioneering Australian band hailing from the multicultural suburb of Punchbowl in South-West Sydney. Formed in the early 1980s, they are celebrated for their irreverent attitude and eclectic sound, blending punk, power pop, and hardcore punk with elements of metal. The band consists of Peter "Blackie" Black (guitar), Ray Ahn (bass), and Keish de Silva (drums, vocals), with Tim Rogers stepping in as a more recent addition. Known for their high-energy performances and catchy yet noisy compositions, the Hard-Ons have built a legacy that spans decades, influencing the punk and alternative rock scenes both in Australia and internationally.
How to Sound Like Hard-Ons
The Hard-Ons' sound is characterized by its raw, aggressive energy and a unique blend of melodic hooks with gritty punk undertones. Their music often features a dirty, distorted guitar tone, achieved using gear like the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal, which gives their riffs a powerful, crushing edge. The crisp, driving rhythms are further accentuated by the use of the Marshall JCM800 2203, adding a classic, tube-driven warmth to their sound. The Hard-Ons' ability to weave melodic elements into their chaotic sonic landscape is also highlighted by the subtle use of effects such as the Boss CE-2 Chorus, which adds a layer of depth and richness to their music. This combination of aggressive punk energy and melodic sensibility is key to capturing the essence of the Hard-Ons' influential sound.
