About
Heaven 17 is a pioneering British electronic group that emerged from the early 1980s synthpop scene. Formed in Sheffield in 1981, the band consists of Martyn Ware (keyboards, synthesizers), Ian Craig Marsh (keyboards, synthesizers), and Glenn Gregory (vocals). Known for their innovative fusion of electronic, pop, and new wave elements, Heaven 17 carved out a niche with their socially conscious lyrics and danceable grooves. Initially a side project of the British Electric Foundation, the band quickly gained prominence with hits like "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang" and "Temptation," solidifying their place in the annals of classic UK pop.
How to Sound Like Heaven 17
Heaven 17's sound is characterized by lush, synthesized textures and rhythmic, danceable beats. Their music often features a mix of clean, melodic synth lines and pulsating bass sequences, creating an atmospheric yet driving soundscape. The use of vintage synthesizers such as the Roland Jupiter-4 and Korg MiniKorg-700s provides a warm, analog richness that is integral to their sound. To replicate their distinctive vibe, musicians might incorporate analog drum machines like the Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer, adding crisp, punchy rhythms that complement the smooth vocal delivery of Glenn Gregory. The combination of these elements results in a sound that is both sophisticated and accessible, with a balance of art rock experimentation and pop sensibility.
