About
Kneebody is an innovative jazz ensemble known for their fusion of experimental jazz with rock, funk, and electronic elements. Formed in Los Angeles in 2001, the group consists of Adam Benjamin (keyboards), Shane Endsley (trumpet), Kaveh Rastegar (bass/guitar), Ben Wendel (saxophone), and Nate Wood (drums/bass). Originating from diverse musical backgrounds and meeting during their studies at the Eastman School of Music and CalArts, Kneebody has carved out a niche in the jazz world with a sound that defies conventional boundaries. Their music is characterized by a collaborative compositional approach, drawing inspiration from '70s fusion, Krautrock, and post-rock influences.
How to Sound Like Kneebody
Kneebody's sound is defined by its dynamic interplay and textural complexity, blending jazz improvisation with structured, rock-inspired arrangements. Their sonic landscape is both ambient and rhythmic, often utilizing effects to expand their instrumental palette. Adam Benjamin's use of the Fender Rhodes Mark I Stage 73 and Moog Moogerfooger MF-102 Ring Modulator adds a rich harmonic layer, providing a warm yet edgy timbre to their compositions. Ben Wendel's saxophone, enhanced by the Selmer Super Balanced Action Tenor, weaves melodic lines that are both intricate and soulful. The complex rhythms from Nate Wood's drumming, paired with Kaveh Rastegar's driving bass lines, create an energetic foundation that pushes the boundaries of traditional jazz. This blend of electronic effects and acoustic instruments results in a sound that is both groundbreaking and accessible, appealing to jazz aficionados and newcomers alike.
