About
Manilla Road is a cult heavy metal band originating from Wichita, Kansas, known for its unique blend of metal, hard rock, speed metal, power metal, and heavy metal. Founded in 1979 by Mark Shelton (vocals, guitar) alongside Scott Parks (bass) and Rick Fisher (drums), the band has remained fiercely independent and geographically isolated throughout its career. Despite limited touring and releases through major labels, Manilla Road has maintained a dedicated fan base worldwide. With a penchant for epic and fantasy lyrics, the band has produced seminal albums such as Crystal Logic and Open the Gates, solidifying its place in the metal underground.
How to Sound Like Manilla Road
Manilla Road's sound is characterized by its raw, aggressive guitar tones and epic, storytelling compositions. The use of solid body electric guitars like the Schecter Hellraiser C-1 and B.C. Rich Warlock Widow helps deliver their powerful, cutting riffs. Their sonic palette often incorporates thrash-influenced drumming and intricate bass lines, as heard with Harvey Patrick's use of the Ibanez RGB300-BKF. This combination creates a sound that is both fierce and melodic, with a heavy emphasis on dynamic shifts and thematic exploration. The Paiste 2002 China Cymbal adds to the complexity of their percussion, contributing to the band's signature chaotic yet controlled energy.
