About

Mastedon is an American Christian rock band known for their powerful fusion of arena rock and AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) styles. Originating in the late 1980s, the group was founded by brothers John Elefante (vocals, keyboards) and Dino Elefante (guitar, backing vocals), both of whom were formerly associated with the band Kansas. Augmented by various session musicians over the years, Mastedon is celebrated for their uplifting and melodic compositions, which blend elements of Christian rock and CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) with the grandiosity of 1980s rock anthems.

How to Sound Like Mastedon

Mastedon's sound is characterized by bold, melodic hooks and layered guitar harmonies that evoke the grandeur of classic arena rock. To approximate their style, focus on achieving a rich, polished tone often associated with tube amplifiers and chorus effects that add depth and presence to the guitar work. The use of analog delay and reverb pedals can create the expansive soundscapes typical of their recordings. Vocals are typically powerful and anthemic, supported by lush harmonies and keyboard textures that provide both a melodic and rhythmic foundation. Drummers aiming to capture Mastedon's energetic yet precise style should focus on tight, driving rhythms that complement the band's dynamic compositions.
