About

Mayday is a pioneering Taiwanese alternative rock band that has been a significant force in the Asian music scene since their formation in 1997. Originating from Taipei, the group consists of five members: Ashin (Chen Shin-Hung) on vocals, Monster (Eugene Wen Shang-Yi) and Stone (Shi Chin-Hang) on guitars, Masa (Tsai Shen-Yen) on bass, and Guan You (Liu Yeh-Ming) on drums. Known for their ability to blend Mandopop, Taiwanese pop, and Chinese rock, Mayday draws inspiration from English-speaking bands such as The Beatles, Oasis, and U2. Their music captures the spirit of late-'90s youth culture, combining Western rock influences with their own unique style, often delivered in Mandarin and the Hokkien dialect. Over the years, they have garnered numerous accolades, including multiple Golden Melody Awards, which are akin to the Grammys in Taiwan.

How to Sound Like Mayday

Mayday's sound is characterized by dynamic guitar-driven compositions that are both melodic and powerful, weaving in elements of garage rock and heartfelt ballads. Their music often features lush guitar tones, as seen with Stone's use of a Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar paired with an Orange Rockerverb MKII 100-Watt Tube Guitar Amp Head and Orange PPC412 Guitar Speaker Cabinet, which contribute to their vibrant, tube-driven sound. The band's compositions are richly layered, creating an atmosphere where emotional depth and catchy melodies intersect. Bass and drums provide a solid rhythmic foundation, allowing the soaring vocals and intricate guitar work to shine. This balance of melodic richness and rhythmic energy makes Mayday's music both engaging and emotionally resonant.
