About

Mourning Widows is a funk rock band formed by Nuno Bettencourt, the acclaimed guitarist from Extreme, alongside his nephew Donovan Bettencourt. The group emerged after Extreme's disbandment and Nuno's solo venture, Schizophonic. They released their self-titled debut album in 1998 and followed it with Furnished Souls for Rent in 2000. Known for their energetic blend of funk grooves and rock elements, Mourning Widows showcases Nuno's virtuosic guitar work and Donovan's rhythmic bass lines, creating a dynamic and captivating sound.

How to Sound Like Mourning Widows

Mourning Widows' sound is characterized by tight, groove-laden riffs and punchy rhythms. Nuno Bettencourt's guitar work, often featuring the Washburn N4, is at the forefront, delivering a mix of crisp, articulate tones and raw, distorted textures. His use of the Pro Co RAT adds a gritty edge, while the Marshall JCM2000 Dual Super Lead provides a robust, tube-driven warmth that complements the band's funk rock aesthetic. The rhythm section, driven by Donovan's bass, maintains a tight, syncopated groove, ensuring the music remains both danceable and powerful. This combination of rhythmic precision and expressive guitar work defines Mourning Widows’ distinctive sound.
