About

Neon Neon is an eclectic musical collaboration formed by Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and left-field hip-hop producer Boom Bip. The duo emerged from the UK and US music scenes, blending their distinct backgrounds to create a sound that spans electronic, alternative dance, and indie electronic genres. Their music is heavily influenced by '80s new wave, alongside inspirations from artists like Prince and Kraftwerk. Neon Neon's projects often revolve around conceptual themes, with their debut album Stainless Style inspired by the life of carmaker John DeLorean and their subsequent work Praxis Makes Perfect exploring the legacy of publisher and activist Giangiacomo Feltrinelli.

How to Sound Like Neon Neon

Neon Neon’s sonic landscape combines warm, analog synth textures with dance-infused beats and quirky, melodic hooks. Their music often features a polished yet retro feel, achieved through the use of classic synthesizers and guitars. Gruff Rhys’s guitar work, utilizing instruments like the Gibson ES-335 and Fender Mustang, adds a layer of organic warmth to their electronic backdrop. This is complemented by effects such as the Electro-Harmonix "Black Russian" Big Muff Pi for a touch of fuzz, enhancing the rhythmic and melodic depth of their tracks. Neon Neon’s production often leans on vintage-inspired synths and modern electronic beats, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
