About

Placebo is a British alternative rock band known for their androgynous style and powerful blend of dark alt-rock infused with goth and electronic elements. Formed in London in 1994 by Brian Molko (vocals, guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass, guitar), the band has gone through a few lineup changes, with Steve Hewitt and later Steve Forrest on drums at different times. Placebo's music has been described as a glam version of Nirvana, with influences from bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Depeche Mode. Their early work, including hits like "Nancy Boy" and "Pure Morning," positioned them as a striking alternative to the Britpop scene of the late '90s.

How to Sound Like Placebo

Placebo's sound is characterized by aggressive, yet melodic guitar lines and a dark, atmospheric vibe. This is often achieved through the use of distorted guitar tones, similar to those produced by Brian Molko's MXR M104 Distortion+ and the warmer, more nuanced textures of his Gretsch Duo Jet Electric Guitar. The band frequently incorporates phasing and chorus effects to add depth and movement, as seen in Molko's use of the MXR M101 Phase 90 and MXR M234 Analog Chorus. Complementing these elements, their driving bass lines and dynamic drumming create a robust backdrop for Molko's emotive vocals, delivering a sound that is both intense and hauntingly evocative.
