About

Focus is a Dutch progressive rock band renowned for their eclectic mix of rock, jazz fusion, and classical influences, which they blend seamlessly into a unique symphonic sound. Formed in Amsterdam in 1969, the band originally featured Thijs van Leer (keyboards, flute, vocals) and Jan Akkerman (guitar), along with various rhythm section members over the years. How to Sound Like Focus

Focus's sound is characterized by complex arrangements and virtuosic musicianship, balancing melodic and rhythmic elements with precision. The clean yet expressive guitar work of Jan Akkerman, often enriched by the Gibson Les Paul Personal Electric Guitar and Marshall Super Lead 100-Watt Head, forms the backbone of their compositions. Akkerman's use of the Boss CS-3 Compression Sustainer helps maintain clarity and sustain in his intricate solos. The band's symphonic textures are further enhanced by Thijs van Leer's flute and keyboard arrangements, which weave through the guitar lines, adding layers of depth and a classical touch. Drums and bass provide a dynamic yet steady groove, underpinning the sophisticated harmonic progressions and shifting time signatures that define their music.
