About

Plumtree is a Canadian indie rock band originating from Halifax, Nova Scotia, known for their spirited blend of punk-pop energy and indie rock sensibilities. Formed in 1993 by a group of teenagers, the lineup included Amanda Braden (vocals, guitar), Nina Martin (bass), and sisters Carla Gillis (guitar) and Lynette Gillis (drums). The band later saw Catriona Sturton replace Martin on bass. Despite their varied musical influences ranging from blues to heavy metal, Plumtree crafted a cohesive sound that resonated with the indie music scene, especially with their second album Predicts the Future and its notable track "Scott Pilgrim," which later inspired a graphic novel series.

How to Sound Like Plumtree

Plumtree’s sound is characterized by its energetic yet melodic edge, driven by the interplay of jangly guitars and dynamic rhythms. Their music often features crisp, punchy guitar riffs and upbeat tempos, creating a lively and infectious vibe. The use of guitars like the Gibson SG Standard and Rickenbacker 620/12 reflects their penchant for vibrant and resonant tones, while the tight rhythm section anchors their compositions with a propulsive drive. To emulate their sound, musicians might focus on achieving a balance between clean, bright guitar tones and a rhythmic, punk-influenced attack, using gear that highlights clarity and punch without sacrificing melodic richness.
