About
Shakti is an innovative musical ensemble that emerged at the intersection of jazz fusion and Indian classical music. Founded in the mid-1970s by virtuoso guitarist John McLaughlin, the group originally included tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionists Ramnad Raghavan and T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram. Shakti is renowned for its dynamic blend of Carnatic and Hindustani music with modern jazz, creating a vibrant and complex soundscape that transcends cultural and musical boundaries. Over the years, the ensemble has seen various line-up changes, including esteemed musicians such as bansuri flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and mandolinist U. Srinivas, but it consistently maintains its core ethos of creative intelligence, beauty, and power.
How to Sound Like Shakti
Shakti’s sound is a mesmerizing tapestry of intricate rhythms and soaring melodies, characterized by the interplay between traditional Indian instruments and Western guitar. The music often features acoustic textures that emphasize clarity and warmth, allowing each instrument's voice to shine. John McLaughlin's guitar work, utilising instruments like the Godin Multiac Fretless and Gibson J-200, is both melodic and percussive, often complemented by the resonant tones of the tabla and the expressive strains of the violin. The ensemble's use of complex rhythmic cycles and spontaneous improvisation creates a fluid and dynamic musical experience. Musicians aspiring to emulate Shakti’s sound should focus on achieving a balanced tonal clarity, where each instrument contributes to a cohesive, yet exploratory sonic journey.
