Silkworm is a pioneering American rock band known for their eclectic blend of post-hardcore, indie rock, and noise rock. The group originated in Missoula, Montana, in 1987, and later relocated to Seattle and then Chicago. The lineup consisted of Andy Cohen (vocals, guitar), Tim Midgett (vocals, bass), Joel Phelps (vocals, guitar), and Michael Dahlquist (drums). Joel Phelps departed the band in the mid-1990s, after which the band continued as a trio. Silkworm carved a niche in the alternative scene with their raw and dissonant sound, leaving an indelible mark on the genres they touched.

Silkworm's sound is characterized by its abrasive yet melodic guitar work, underpinned by driving bass lines and dynamic drumming. Their music often features a raw, lo-fi aesthetic, blending chaotic energy with intricate song structures typical of math rock. The dirty, aggressive tones of the guitars, achieved using instruments like the Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, are further enriched by effects such as the Matchless HotBox Classic. This creates a gritty texture that perfectly complements the band's introspective and often sardonic lyrics. Amplifiers and pedals are used to craft a sound that is both visceral and atmospheric, providing a compelling backdrop to the band's storytelling.
