About

Software is a German electronic music project renowned for their pioneering contributions to the space rock, New Age, and Krautrock genres. Founded in the early 1980s by Peter Mergener (sound designer) and Michael Weisser (science fiction writer), the duo became known for their unique blend of ambient soundscapes and conceptual themes inspired by science fiction. Their work, often released under Klaus Schulze's Innovative Communication label, integrates natural sounds and acoustic instruments like the saxophone, creating a distinctive sound that bridges the organic and the electronic. Although not as widely recognized as peers like Tangerine Dream, Software cultivated a dedicated following and influenced the ambient techno and downtempo movements of the 1990s.

How to Sound Like Software

Software’s sound is characterized by lush, arpeggiated synthesizer lines and ethereal ambient textures, providing a cosmic journey through sound. The use of analog synthesizers and sequencers plays a crucial role in crafting their enveloping sonic landscapes, often complemented by subtle natural sound samples like bird calls and ocean waves, which add an organic layer to their music. Their compositions frequently explore vast, echoing spaces, achieved using reverb and delay effects, contributing to a sense of depth and expansiveness. To emulate Software’s aesthetic, musicians might employ vintage synthesizers or modern equivalents with rich modulation capabilities, alongside multi-effect processors to replicate their dreamy, immersive soundscapes.
