About
Sons of Kemet is a groundbreaking jazz ensemble originating from London, known for their innovative fusion of jazz, African rhythms, and Caribbean influences. Formed in 2011, the group is spearheaded by the dynamic Shabaka Hutchings (saxophone, clarinet), alongside Theon Cross (tuba), and a rotating duo of drummers which includes Tom Skinner and Eddie Hick. Their music transcends traditional jazz boundaries, incorporating elements of afrofuturism and contemporary jazz to create a sound that is both politically charged and rhythmically compelling.
How to Sound Like Sons of Kemet
Sons of Kemet's music is characterized by intense, rhythmic interplay and vibrant, layered textures. The group's sound is both raw and intricate, driven by the propulsive energy of dual drummers and the deep, resonant tones of the tuba. Shabaka Hutchings' use of the Oldroyd Walker Lineage Saxophone and Selmer Super Balanced Action Tenor injects a piercing, expressive quality into their compositions, while the drumming—featuring gear like the Ludwig Classic Maple Drum Kit and Bosphorus Traditional Series Hi-hats—delivers a polyrhythmic complexity that underpins their sound. Their music is a dynamic tapestry of rhythmic intensity and melodic exploration, inviting musicians to explore the intersections between jazz, world music, and contemporary soundscapes.
