About
Soulive is an American jazz-funk trio hailing from Woodstock, New York. Formed in 1999, the group is composed of Eric Krasno (guitar), Alan Evans (drums), and Neal Evans (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards). Known for their dynamic blend of jazz, funk, soul, and jam band influences, Soulive has cultivated a sound that is both retro and contemporary, resonating with audiences across multiple genres. Their instrumental prowess and ability to seamlessly integrate elements of acid jazz and soul jazz have distinguished them in the modern jazz-funk landscape.
How to Sound Like Soulive
Soulive's sound is characterized by smooth, groove-laden rhythms and vibrant, melodic leads. Eric Krasno's guitar work often incorporates the warm, resonant tones of a Gibson ES-335, delivering solos that are both expressive and technically precise. The harmonic depth provided by Neal Evans' Hammond B-3 organ brings a rich, vintage texture that complements the rhythmic foundation laid down by Alan Evans' drums. Amplifiers such as the Fender '65 Super Reverb help create a vibrant, articulate sound, while the use of Shin's Music Dumbloid overdrive pedals adds a layer of grit and intensity, giving their performances a compelling edge. This combination of gear and musical synergy results in a sound that is both energetic and immersive, encouraging listeners to lose themselves in the groove.
