About
Steel Pole Bath Tub is an American noise rock band renowned for their gritty, experimental sound that fuses elements of post-hardcore, noise rock, and punk. Originating from Bozeman, Montana in 1986, the band was founded by Mike Morasky (guitar, vocals) and Dale Flattum (bass, vocals). After relocating to Seattle, they were joined by Dorothy Kent (drums), a veteran of the early '80s hardcore band Mr. Epp. The trio eventually settled in San Francisco, where they became a staple of the underground music scene. Known for their unconventional use of tape loops, dialogue samples from vintage media, and deconstructive covers, Steel Pole Bath Tub carved a niche for themselves with their early releases like Butterfly Love and Tulip.
How to Sound Like Steel Pole Bath Tub
The sonic landscape of Steel Pole Bath Tub is a chaotic blend of distorted textures and abrasive feedback, creating an aggressive yet captivating auditory experience. Their music often feels like a relentless wave of sound, characterized by fuzzed-out bass lines and blasts of guitar noise. To achieve this raw, unpolished vibe, the band utilized gear that emphasized grit and power. For instance, Morasky's use of a Fender American Standard Stratocaster paired with a Fender 'Black Panel' Twin Reverb amp provided the necessary punch and clarity amidst the chaos. This combination allowed for the piercing feedback and heavy distortion that defined their sound, while the rhythmic onslaught from Kent's drumming anchored their often frenetic compositions. Steel Pole Bath Tub's music thrives on its deconstructive approach and relentless energy, making abrasive effects and unconventional techniques crucial for capturing their unique style.
