About

Sub Sub was a pioneering act from the early '90s Manchester rave scene, known for their distinctive acid house sound. The group was formed by Jez Williams, Andy Williams, and Jimi Goodwin, who would later become the members of the band Doves. Emerging from Manchester, England, Sub Sub captured the essence of the Madchester movement with their trippy, dance-driven tracks. Their music was characterized by infectious beats and a pulsating energy, exemplified by the success of their hit single "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" which climbed to number three on the UK charts. Despite their promising start, an unfortunate studio fire in 1995 led to a pivotal transformation, eventually resulting in the formation of Doves.

How to Sound Like Sub Sub

To capture the essence of Sub Sub's sound, one must dive into the world of vibrant, energetic beats and psychedelic textures. Their music was a tapestry of layered electronic rhythms and hypnotic bass lines, driven by a desire to move the dancefloor. The use of equipment like the Fender 'Silverface' Vibrolux Reverb (1970-1980) and Maxon AD80 Analog Delay helped create their rich, echoing soundscapes. These tools allowed for the creation of atmospheric sound layers that were both immersive and lively, fitting perfectly into the rave scene's kaleidoscopic aesthetic. The interplay of dynamic effects and rhythmic precision defined their sound, making it a unique blend of danceability and sonic depth.
