About
Subtle is an experimental hip hop collective formed in 2001 by Amoeba Music record store employees and musicians Jel (Jeffrey Logan) on percussion and Doseone (Adam Drucker) on vocals, who were already known as part of the Anticon band Themselves. They were soon joined by Dax Pierson on keys and autoharp, Marty Dowers on woodwinds, Jordan Dalrymple on guitar, and Alexander Kort on cello. The group is recognized for its eclectic fusion of hip hop, avant-garde jazz, and electronic music, crafting a sound that defies conventional genre boundaries. Despite facing challenges, such as the tragic accident that left Pierson paralyzed in 2005, Subtle continued to push artistic limits with albums like A New White and For Hero: For Fool.
