About
Tartit is a vibrant musical group from the Tombouctou region of Mali, featuring a unique blend of Ethiopian jazz and Gnawa music. Comprising five women and four men, all from the Tamasheq ethnic group known as Tuareg, the group's members include Fadimata Walett Oumar, Walett Oumar Zeinabou, Mama Walet Amoumine, and Fadimata W. Mohamedun on tinde and vocals; Tafa Al Hosseini on vocals and imzad; Mohamed Issa Ag Oumar on lead electric guitar and vocals; Ag Mohamed Idwal on four-string teherdent lute and guitar; Amanou on three-string tehardent lute, guitar, and vocals; and lead vocalist Mossa Ag Mohamed. Formed in a refugee camp in Burkina Faso, Tartit uses music as a powerful tool for cultural preservation and social expression, performing across Europe and North America alongside renowned artists like Ali Farka Touré and Tinariwen.
How to Sound Like Tartit
To capture Tartit's sound, focus on the rich, percussive textures and evocative vocal harmonies that define their music. The group's soundscape is shaped by the rhythmic pulse of the tinde drum and the imzad's haunting melodies, creating an earthy, resonant atmosphere. The use of traditional African instruments like the teherdent lute and electric guitar adds a dynamic contrast, blending acoustic warmth with electric vibrancy. Achieving Tartit's sound involves a balance of percussive elements and modal melodies, with an emphasis on live, organic performance that highlights the interplay of vocals and instrumentation. The integration of hand drums and percussive accents further enriches their sonic character, bringing a visceral energy to their recordings and live performances alike.
