About
Telefon Tel Aviv is an experimental electronic music project originating from New Orleans, founded by Joshua Eustis and the late Charles Cooper. Known for their intricate sound design and emotional depth, the group blends genres like electronica, downtempo, IDM, glitch, and microhouse. Since Cooper's passing, Eustis has continued the project as a solo endeavor, expanding its sonic palette while maintaining its core ethos. Telefon Tel Aviv debuted in 2001 with Fahrenheit Fair Enough, a landmark album in the IDM genre, and has continued to evolve with releases such as 2009's Immolate Yourself.
How to Sound Like Telefon Tel Aviv
Telefon Tel Aviv’s sound is characterized by its intricate and emotive textures, combining glitchy, melodic elements with deep, ambient undertones. Their music often features a clean yet complex electronic aesthetic, achieved through the use of sophisticated software like Ableton Live and Max/MSP, which allow for highly nuanced sound manipulation. The use of a Fender Jazzmaster provides a warm, resonant foundation, contrasting with the digital precision of synthesizers and controllers like the Monome Grid 64. This meticulous layering of analog and digital elements creates a soundscape that is both expansive and intimately detailed, inviting listeners into a world of sonic exploration.
