About
The Cockroaches were an Australian rock band formed in the early 1980s by brothers John Field (guitar, vocals) and Paul Field (vocals), joined by Tony Field (guitar, vocals), Phil Robinson (bass, replaced later by Phil Carson and then Peter Mackie), and Jeff Fatt (keyboards). Emerging from boarding school in New South Wales, they quickly became a mainstay in the local pub scene with their energetic performances and catchy rock tunes. Their music, rooted in rock and R&B, found commercial success in Australia, particularly with their self-titled debut album, which produced the hit single "She's the One."
How to Sound Like The Cockroaches
The Cockroaches' sound is characterized by upbeat rock rhythms and melodic hooks, creating an infectious energy that resonated with audiences. Their style is typically clean and melodic, often driven by the jangly tones of electric guitars, such as the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster used by John Field. The warm, punchy bass lines provided by instruments like the Fender Precision Bass, played by Anthony Field, add depth to their compositions. The band's dynamic keyboard sections, courtesy of Jeff Fatt and his use of the Nord Stage 2 88-Key Stage Keyboard, infuse their songs with an additional layer of harmonic richness that complements their lively rock essence.
