About

The Connells are a rock band hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, known for their blend of alternative rock and jangle pop. Formed in 1984, the group originally consisted of Mike Connell (guitar), David Connell (bass), Doug MacMillan (vocals), and Peele Wimberley (drums), with the lineup later expanding to include George Huntley (guitar, vocals) and Steve Potak (keyboards). The Connells gained widespread popularity with their 1993 album Ring, featuring the hit single "74-75," which became a significant success across Europe.

How to Sound Like The Connells

To capture the sound of The Connells, musicians should focus on creating a melodic and jangly guitar tone that is both clean and resonant. This can be achieved through the use of single-coil pickups and bright, clear amplifiers that highlight the shimmering quality of their guitar work. The band's music often features layered guitar arrangements with a mix of rhythmic strumming and melodic lead lines, reminiscent of classic jangle pop. Incorporating subtle modulation effects like chorus and reverb can add depth and polish to the sound. A solid yet understated rhythm section, with tight bass lines and dynamic drumming, provides a driving yet unobtrusive backdrop that allows the melodic elements to shine. The Connells' music thrives on its catchy hooks and harmonious vocals, making vocal harmony and clarity essential for capturing their distinctive style.
