About

The Dells are a legendary American vocal group that emerged from Harvey, Illinois, in 1953. Originally formed as the El-Rays, the group included members Marvin Junior (lead baritone), Johnny Funches (lead tenor), Verne Allison (tenor), Lucius McGill (tenor), Mickey McGill (second baritone), and Chuck Barksdale (bass). Known for their smooth harmonies and classic soul sound, they transitioned successfully from doo-wop to a polished smooth soul style. They became renowned for hits like "Oh What a Nite" and maintained a stable lineup, with Johnny Carter eventually replacing Funches, contributing to their longevity in the rhythm and blues, soul, and Motown genres.

How to Sound Like The Dells

To capture the essence of The Dells' sound, musicians should focus on achieving rich vocal harmonies and smooth transitions that characterize their music. Their style is rooted in clean, melodic arrangements with a touch of soulful depth, often relying on the interplay between lead and harmony vocals. The use of vintage-inspired rhythm sections with subtle, dynamic percussion helps create the foundational groove. Emphasizing warm, analog textures through classic recording techniques and equipment, such as tape echo and tube preamps, can replicate the group's timeless feel. Layering vocals with slight reverb and maintaining a balance between rhythmic drive and melodic flow will help recreate the lush, emotive sound synonymous with The Dells' classic soul and R&B legacy.
