Jerry Butler & The Impressions were a pioneering American soul group hailing from Chicago, Illinois, originally formed in 1958. The group was initially known as The Roosters before evolving into The Impressions. The classic lineup consisted of Jerry Butler (lead vocals), Curtis Mayfield (guitar, vocals), Sam Gooden (vocals), Richard Brooks (vocals), and Arthur Brooks (vocals). Known for their contributions to the genres of Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Doo-wop, and Chicago Soul, they are celebrated for their seamless vocal harmonies and socially conscious lyrics. With Butler's gospel-inflected voice and Mayfield's influential guitar work, they crafted hits that resonated deeply with the themes of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
