About

The Heart Throbs were an English band known for their blend of dream pop, jangle pop, and shoegaze. Emerging in the mid-1980s, the group was formed by Rose Carlotti (guitar, vocals) and Stephen Ward (guitar, vocals) who initially conceived the idea at college in Birmingham before developing it in Reading. The lineup was completed by Rose’s sister, Rachael Carlotti (bass, vocals), and Mark Side (drums). Later, guitarist Alan Barclay joined the band. The Heart Throbs made a notable impression with their debut album Cleopatra Grip, earning attention for their richly textured soundscapes and introspective pop sensibilities.

How to Sound Like The Heart Throbs

The Heart Throbs' sound is characterized by lush, ethereal guitar textures and melodic interplay that reflect their dream pop and shoegaze influences. Their music often features jangly guitar riffs layered with reverb and delay, creating a dreamy, immersive sonic environment. This atmospheric quality is achieved through the use of chorus and flange effects, which add depth and shimmer to their arrangements. The rhythm section combines driving bass lines with dynamic drumming, providing a steady yet fluid foundation that complements their melodic focus. For musicians looking to capture their sound, analog delay pedals and tube amps can help achieve the warm, expansive tones that define The Heart Throbs' music.
