About
The Low Anthem is an indie folk band originating from Providence, Rhode Island. Known for their eclectic and atmospheric sound, the group was founded by Ben Knox Miller (vocals, guitar) and Jeffrey Prystowsky (bass, drums), who met while working as college radio DJs. They were later joined by Jocie Adams (vocals, clarinet, trumpet). With music that traverses the realms of indie folk, folktronica, and new Americana, The Low Anthem has distinguished itself through a blend of traditional and experimental sounds, often categorized as "stomp and holler" and "Rhode Island indie."
How to Sound Like The Low Anthem
To capture the sound of The Low Anthem, musicians should focus on creating a blend of warm, organic tones and innovative textures. The band frequently utilizes acoustic instruments like guitars and clarinets, often recorded with simple, lo-fi techniques to maintain an intimate, authentic feel. Employing analog recording methods or a single microphone setup can help replicate this raw quality. Layering ambient soundscapes and subtle electronic elements provides a modern twist, while dynamic shifts and unconventional instrumentations, such as trumpet or pump organ, add depth and intrigue. By balancing traditional folk elements with experimental production, one can closely approximate the unique and atmospheric vibe of The Low Anthem.
