About

The Misunderstood were a pioneering American group known for their innovative blend of blues rock, psychedelic rock, and garage rock, with a touch of acid rock and proto-punk. Formed in the mid-1960s in Riverside, California, the band was originally composed of Rick Brown (vocals), Glenn Ross Campbell (pedal steel guitar), Steve Whiting (bass), Rick Moe (drums), and Tony Hill (guitar). Their sound was characterized by Campbell’s unique use of the pedal steel guitar, which set them apart from other bands of their era. Despite releasing only a few singles, The Misunderstood left a lasting impact on the psychedelic rock scene, often noted for their sonic boldness and forward-thinking approach.

How to Sound Like The Misunderstood

The Misunderstood’s sound was both forceful and otherworldly, merging blues-inflected riffs with psychedelic tonal explorations. Glenn Ross Campbell’s pedal steel guitar was central to their signature sound, known for its sweeping glissandos and vibrant tonal shifts, creating a sense of cosmic exploration. This was complemented by intense, driving rhythms and soulful, raw vocals. To emulate their sound, musicians might explore using a Fender Precision Bass for its solid tonal foundation, paired with vintage tube amps that offer a rich, warm overdrive. Effects like fuzz and reverb would be essential to capture the band’s ability to transition from gritty rock to expansive psychedelia, embodying the adventurous spirit of their era.
