About
The Only Ones are an influential English rock band that emerged during the late 1970s. Known for their unique blend of rock, new wave, pop rock, power pop, post-punk, and punk, the group was formed in London. The band consisted of Peter Perrett (vocals, guitar), John Perry (guitar), Alan Mair (bass), and Mike Kellie (drums). They are best remembered for their hit "Another Girl, Another Planet," which showcased their ability to merge punk energy with melodic sensibilities. Despite their brief initial run from 1978 to 1981, they have maintained a cult following and significant influence over subsequent generations of musicians.
How to Sound Like The Only Ones
The Only Ones' sound is characterized by a dynamic interplay of melodic guitar lines and punchy rhythms, creating a compelling mix of raw energy and polished craftsmanship. John Perry's guitar work often features layered, harmonic textures achieved with instruments like the Fender Telecaster and Gibson ES-335, which provide both clarity and warmth. His use of the Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo adds a touch of vintage delay and modulation, enhancing the band's expansive yet gritty sonic landscape. The rhythm section, anchored by Alan Mair's bass through an Ashdown RM-410-EVO II Bass Cabinet, complements the driving, emotionally charged narratives that define their music. Together, these elements create a sound that is both nostalgic and ahead of its time, capturing the restless spirit of their era.
