About

The Shaggs were a pioneering American band from Fremont, New Hampshire, known for their raw and unpolished take on outsider rock, avant-garde, and proto-punk. Formed in the mid-1960s, the group consisted of the Wiggin sisters: Dot (guitar, vocals), Helen (drums), and Betty (guitar, vocals), later joined by their sister Rachel (bass). Their unique sound and unconventional approach to music were largely influenced by their father, Austin Wiggin, who believed in a prophecy that his daughters would achieve musical success. The Shaggs' 1969 album, Philosophy of the World, remains a cult classic, celebrated for its innocence and unintentionally avant-garde style.

How to Sound Like The Shaggs

The Shaggs’ music is characterized by an unrefined and chaotic sound, featuring dissonant melodies and erratic rhythms that defy conventional song structures. Their style is both primitive and experimental, with a raw, lo-fi production that captures a sense of naivety and genuine expression. Dot Wiggin's use of the Avalon AV-2T guitar contributes to their stark and jangly tone, while Helen's drumming provides a pounding, unpredictable backdrop that complements the group's off-kilter vibe. Rather than relying on traditional gear to shape their sound, the Shaggs embody a DIY ethos, using their instruments in a way that feels spontaneous and unrestrained. This results in a soundscape that's both hauntingly sincere and intriguingly unconventional, appealing to those interested in the fringes of musical expression.
