About

The Sherbs were an Australian rock group known for their smooth blend of soft rock, arena rock, and AOR styles. Emerging in 1980 as a reformation of the highly successful 1970s band Sherbet, The Sherbs featured Daryl Braithwaite (vocals), Harvey James (guitar), Tony Mitchell (bass), Garth Porter (keyboards), and Alan Sandow (drums). Following the release of their debut album, I Have the Skill, Harvey James departed and was replaced by guitarist Tony Leigh for their subsequent album, Defying Gravity. Despite their brief run, The Sherbs left a lasting impression with their polished, radio-friendly sound.

How to Sound Like The Sherbs

To emulate The Sherbs' sound, musicians should focus on creating a clean, melodic tone that balances lush instrumentation with accessible hooks. Warm, overdriven guitar tones achieved through tube amplifiers are key to capturing their arena rock edge, while smooth keyboard textures add a polished layer to their arrangements. The bass should be solid and supportive, anchoring the rhythm section without overshadowing the other elements. The use of dynamic drumming keeps the energy high and complements the overall sound without becoming too aggressive. Incorporating subtle chorus effects and reverb can enhance the spacious quality of their music, allowing it to fill larger spaces while maintaining a sense of intimacy.
