About
The Streets is a seminal British music project that fuses elements of hip hop, UK garage, grime, and modern rock. Led by frontman Mike Skinner, The Streets began in Birmingham and quickly rose to prominence with their distinctively British narratives and innovative soundscapes. While Skinner is the driving force behind the project, creating and producing much of the music himself, live performances have often featured a rotating lineup of supporting musicians who help bring his vision to life. The Streets is celebrated for their clever lyricism and genre-blending approach, most notably through albums like Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don’t Come For Free.
How to Sound Like The Streets
The sound of The Streets is both gritty and melodic, characterized by Mike Skinner's conversational vocal delivery and the integration of diverse musical influences. The production often contrasts raw, lo-fi beats with smooth synth layers, creating a dynamic yet cohesive sonic landscape. Keyboards and synthesizers, like the Behringer Neutron, contribute to the group's electronic textures. Meanwhile, the use of effects processors, such as the Electrix Pro Filter Factory, adds a unique, filtered edge to the sound, allowing for experimental manipulation of bass lines and rhythms. This distinctive blend of organic and electronic elements gives The Streets their unmistakable, urban sound.
