About

The Style Council was an influential English band formed in 1983 by Paul Weller (vocals, guitar) and Mick Talbot (keyboards). Emerging from the dissolution of Weller's previous band, The Jam, The Style Council embraced a diverse palette of genres including rock, jazz, new wave, and sophisti-pop. The group often expanded its lineup to include musicians like Steve White (drums) and Dee C. Lee (vocals), tailoring their sound to suit each musical endeavor. Known for their polished blend of soulful melodies and socially conscious lyrics, The Style Council carved a unique niche within the vibrant UK pop scene of the 1980s.

How to Sound Like The Style Council

The Style Council's sound is characterized by its sophisticated mix of polished, melodic pop and rich, jazz-infused textures. Their music often features smooth, fluid guitar lines, which Paul Weller achieved using instruments like the Epiphone Casino and the Rickenbacker 360F. These guitars, with their semi-hollow bodies, provide a warm resonance that complements the band's layered arrangements. Mick Talbot's use of the Kawai EP-308 Electric Baby Grand adds a lush, harmonic dimension, punctuating the grooves with its crisp, articulate timbre. The rhythmic foundation is often accentuated by dynamic drumming and percussive elements, such as the Zildjian 22" Swish Knocker, which brings a distinctive shimmer to their tracks. Together, these elements create a refined and dynamic soundscape, balancing elegance with a subtle, yet compelling, edge.
