About

The Swan Silvertones are an influential gospel group renowned for their harmonious blend of spiritual fervor and vocal excellence. Originating as the a cappella quartet Four Harmony Kings in 1938 in Coalwood, West Virginia, they were founded by tenor Claude Jeter. The group underwent a name change to The Swan Silvertones in 1942 when they began a radio show in Knoxville, Tennessee. Key members over the years have included Claude Jeter (lead tenor), Solomon Womack (lead vocals), Robert Crenshaw (tenor), John Manson (tenor), John H. Myles (baritone), and Henry K. Bossard (bass). As their style evolved, guitarist Linwood Hargrove joined, alongside notable jazz musicians like Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Walter Perkins (drums), adding instrumental depth to their primarily vocal roots. Their music, deeply rooted in the gospel genre, is characterized by a blend of jubilee and a more contemporary gospel style, capturing both traditional and progressive elements.
