About
van Canto is a unique German metal group that stands out in the metal scene for their innovative approach to the genre. Formed in 2006, the band consists of five vocalists and a drummer: Dennis Schunke (lead male vocals), Inga Scharf (lead female vocals), Stefan Schmidt (lower "mimic" vocals), Ross Thompson (higher "mimic" vocals), Ingo Sterzinger (bass "mimic" vocals), and Bastian Emig (drums). van Canto is known for their a cappella metal style, where the vocalists use their voices to emulate the sounds of guitars and bass, described by the band as "rakkatakka" and "doom bass" sounds. Their music spans multiple metal genres, including power metal, symphonic metal, and folk metal, and they have gained recognition for their original songs as well as inventive covers of classic metal tracks.
How to Sound Like van Canto
To capture the distinct sound of van Canto, musicians should focus on creating a powerful and dynamic vocal arrangement that can substitute for traditional metal instrumentation. The band's sound is characterized by rich, layered vocal harmonies that emulate the textures and aggression of electric guitars and bass. Each vocalist contributes to the overall sonic tapestry with precision and clarity, using versatile vocal techniques to achieve the necessary tonal variety. A key component of their sound is percussive vocal elements that mimic rhythm guitar riffs, alongside melodic vocal lines that provide the soaring leads typical of metal anthems. The drum work, while the only traditional instrument in the band, is energetic and driving, providing the rhythmic backbone and intensity needed to propel their vocal arrangements forward. Achieving this sound requires not only strong vocal skills but also a keen sense of timing and dynamics to convey the power and emotion found in metal music.
