Vanna Members, Gear & Sound

Vanna is an American band recognized for their potent blend of screamo, post-hardcore, and metalcore influences. Emerging from Boston in 2004, the group originally consisted of Chris Preece (vocals), Evan Pharmakis (guitar, vocals), Brandon Davis (guitar), Shawn Marquis (bass), and Nicholas Lambert (drums). Known for their intense energy and emotive performances, Vanna quickly carved out a niche in the hardcore punk scene, gaining acclaim with releases like their debut EP, The Search Party Never Came, and the full-length album Curses. Over time, the band underwent several lineup changes, each contributing to the evolution of their sound, until their farewell in 2017. The original lineup has since reunited, rekindling the passionate and aggressive spirit that originally defined their music.

Vanna's sound is characterized by aggressive, raw guitar tones and dynamic vocal interplay between melodic singing and harsh screams, creating a visceral listening experience. Their music often features heavy, drop-tuned riffs and breakdowns, giving it a gritty and forceful edge. The guitarists frequently employ distortion and overdrive effects to achieve their signature abrasive sound, while the rhythmic foundation is bolstered by the driving force of hard-hitting drum patterns. Drummer Eric Gross, for example, uses Zildjian cymbals to add powerful, cutting accents. Vanna's compositions are marked by their ability to seamlessly blend melody and brute force, embodying the raw, emotive core of the hardcore genre.
