About

Vida Blue is an eclectic jam band formed by Page McConnell, the renowned keyboardist of Phish, during the band's hiatus in 2000. Originating from a serendipitous gathering in New Orleans, the group includes Oteil Burbridge (bass), known for his work with the Allman Brothers Band, and Russell Batiste (drums), a staple in the Funky Meters. Their sound is a dynamic fusion of electronica, jazz, funk, and exploratory rock, often characterized by their improvisational spirit and the diverse influences each member brings to the table.

How to Sound Like Vida Blue

Vida Blue's sonic landscape is both rich and exploratory, weaving through textures that are vibrant and complex. The band is anchored by Page McConnell's mastery of keyboards, which include the lush tones of the Moog One Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer and the versatile Yamaha CS-60. These synths add a layer of depth and electronic intrigue to their sound, while McConnell's use of the Hammond B-3 provides a warm, classic organ timbre. Oteil Burbridge’s bass lines, often delivered through a 1964 Fender American Jazz Bass Sunburst, inject a groove that is both fluid and foundational, enriching the band's rhythmic complexity. The drums by Russell Batiste contribute a dynamic and lively backbone, inviting spontaneous jams and energetic exchanges. Together, these elements create a sound that is both melodic and rhythmically intricate, perfect for musicians looking to capture the essence of an engaging and multifaceted jam experience.
